FAQ

What are Highway to Health's main goals? Primarily, we seek the happiness of others and wish to EDUCATE people (through online videos, articles, books and DVDs) about the healthiest way to live. We believe in an all-wise and loving Creator, and that we are all "fearfully and wonderfully made" (Psalm 139:14). We wish "above all things that you may prosper and be in health" (3 John 2). We also offer a wide array of natural products and equipment that support the body's efforts to heal itself.

Does Highway to Health recommend eating and drinking products that come from animals? We believe that the most nutrient-dense, healing foods are fresh vegetables, ripe fruits, whole grains, nuts and seeds, and also that the best scientific research today supports our position (see www.nutritionfacts.org, run by Dr. Michael Greger, M.D.). We are also concerned that growing percentages of animals used for food, milk, and eggs are filled with disease, and that the flesh of fish is often saturated with high levels of heavy metals like mercury and aluminum. Ultimately, animals get their own core nutrition from plants, and by eating plants directly we bypass the diseases, extra cholesterol, antibiotics, and hormones they are often contaminated with. We also recognized that becoming the healthiest eater is a process where people usually make changes gradually by replacing more risky foods with wholesome ones. We wish to kindly support all who are making progress on the journey!

For those with serious illness, what do you recommend? First, we always recommend qualified medical supervision. That said, we also believe the best doctor is human body itself, and that given the right tools, it can work wonders toward resolving what ails us. In situations of life-threatening illness, we strongly recommend -- for those willing to do it -- a very aggressive nutritional approach (see below) combined with exercise, water, sunlight, fresh air, rest, and trust in God (the Greatest Physician of all).

What is the most aggressive nutritional approach? We strongly believe that drinking the freshly squeezed juice of fresh vegetables (such as carrots, beets, celery, cucumbers) floods every cell in the body with super nutrition (watch the DVD, "Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead," produced by Joe Cross). Soaking nuts (almonds, walnuts, pecans, etc) and sprouting seeds (sunflower, mung, fenugreek, etc.) and whole grains (wheat, rye, barley, oats, millet, etc) also greatly increases their enzyme, vitamin, mineral, and cancer-fighting phytochemical contents (see the book, Becoming Raw, by Brenda Davis, RD). We recommend high intakes of raw foods, live foods (sprouts), plus freshly-cut wheatgrass juice used so successfully by health pioneer Ann Wigmore (read The Wheatgrass Book, by Ann Wigmore). We also recommend short periods of fasting on nothing but fresh vegetable juices (see The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Juice Fasting, by Steven Prussack and Bo Rinaldi), plus the use of herbs, which science now recognizes as having powerful medicinal properties (see Herbs that Heal: RX: Prescription for Herbal Healing, by Michael A. Do you promote an all-raw vegetarian diet? We recommend aiming for the goal of 80% raw, 20% cooked. Notice carefully: this is a "goal." But again, we realize that positive change comes gradually, and we support people wherever they are on the journey. The latest nutritional research clearly supports the importance of increasing the amount of raw, unprocessed fruits and vegetables in the diet, and proves the powerful health benefits of doing so. We also recognize that some cooking has benefits too, such as the releasing of nutrients otherwise bound (as with legumes). The science of raw and how-best-to-cook continues to advance. Obviously, lightly steaming veggies is much healthier than frying them in highly processed, hydrogenated oil! These are exciting times, and Highway to Health wishes to continually benefit from cutting-edge research.

Do you recommend only organic foods? We believe that, generally speaking, organic foods -- although more expensive -- contain higher levels of nutrients and are less risky because they are less likely to be contaminated by potentially harmful pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, and chemicals. That said, we recommend you do the best you can, based on your budget. In other words, juicing organic carrots is best, but if you can't get them, or afford them, then juice what you can. Your body will still bless you. It's still much better than sipping coffee or Coke!
